BUSINESS SITUATION 2010

Demand showed no signs of recovery in either the fine chemistry or the silicate chemistry sectors of the Chemistry Division's operations. Sales declined by more than 20%. Rigorous earnings enhancement measures and a further downsizing of the workforce helped improve the divisional EBIT result, despite the substantial sales decline; but earnings for the division were still negative for the year.

The Chemistry Division includes Silicate Chemistry and sundry chemical activities.

The sundry chemical activities comprise the CU Chemie Uetikon AG (produces deuterated compounds) and the CU Agro AG (manufacturer of press fertilizers)
